Sharia Law

1. 5 hadd crimes
  • unlawful sexual intercourse - death by stoning or one hundred lashes
  • theft - amputation of hand
  • false accusation of unlawful sexual intercourse - chastisement
  • wine drinking - prayers lacking for 40 days
  • highway robbery - death
2. Criminal law is controversial because there are set punishments in set by the Hadiths as to how to approach certain crimes, but not all of those living in some of these countries are Muslim.

3. Honor killing and other crimes still occur for bringing dishonor to one's family and is still a large problem worldwide.

4. Many believe that the punishments for hadd crimes are too harsh. However, others believe that it is necessary to follow the punishments set forth in the Koran. Overall many wonder if sharia law can coexist with democratic government and with secular trials for crimes.

5.  Dual legal systems: there is sharia court available for muslims citizens and secular courts available for non-muslim citizens, however, this is mostly for family and civil law
Government under god: all law is muslim and even non-muslim citizens must follow sharia law in their daily lives and practices
Completely secular: law is not based on sharia however it often influences customs due to the muslim culture in these countries

6. I don't think that sharia and secular law can coexist because they are so drastically different. It's also difficult to apply rules to certain citizens but not to others. However, I think that finding a wasy for these legal systems to work together could greatly increase peace in the Muslim regions of the world.

7. Sharia law demands that interest is illegal in banking. This means that there is a large demand for Muslim banking in the middle east. Businesses that conform to sharia are also required to avoid any business transactions that deal with weapons, alcohol, tobacco, gambling, or pornography.
